2001 Volvo S40

LED interior Light conversion

This Is how I converted my standard bulb interior lights to LED interior lights. It is a relatively simple process, and I will try to explain it the best that I can.

Here is the schematic that I made for the LED "blocks". I used this 3x3 array in the front, and a 2x3 version of this array in the back.

This is what the final block looked like before it got implanted into the overhead assembly.

The LED blocks are made of LEDs, Resistors, and a Diode.

The LEDs are 3.4v super bright 14000mcd white, bought off of eBay for dirt cheap. So far I have used about 30 of my 100 that I got for $30.

The diode is a standard diode... Basicly any silicon diode will work - Its job is just to short out any negative surges.

The resistors are standard 1/4 watt, tolerance doesn't realy matter.

The hardest part of this for me was holding the LEDs while I was soldering. I ended up using a piece of wood with holes drilled in it to hold them while I soldered. This worked extremely well and I would recommend that you do this from the start.

This is another assembly made by a member of s40concepts.net who included a selectable color switch, you can go from white to red with the flick of a switch that was also in the assembly.
Here is the 2 LED blocks solderd into my overhead assembly. In a 2001 S40, the far pad is positive and the near pad is negitive. this is irrelvetn with bulbs, but with LEDs it matters.

And the results:
